Status: Thiqah Thabat

Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

Those who praised him:

1-    Imaam Yoonus bin Yazeed al-Aylee (D. 159) – the student of Zuhri said:

كان عقيل يصحب الزهري في سفره وحضره
“Uqayl accompanied Zuhri in Journey and in residence”

2-    Imaam Ziyaad bin Sa’d al-Khurasaani (the student of Zuhri) said:

كَانَ عقِيلَ يحفظ
“Uqayl was a Memorizer”
[ Taareekh al-Kabeer by al-Bukhaari (7/94), Chain Saheeh]

3-    Imaam Muhammad bin Sa’d (D. 230) said:

صاحب الزهري وكان ثقة
“He was the companion of Zuhri and was Thiqah”
[ Tabaqaat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa'd (7/360)]

4-    Imaam Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) said:

أثبت الناس في الزهري مالك بن أنس ومعمر ويونس وعقيل وشعيب بن ابى حمزة وسفيان بن عيينة
“The most accurate of people in narrating from Zuhri are: Maalik bin Anas, Ma’mar, Yoonus, Uqayl, Shu’ayb bin Abi Hamzah and Sufyaan bin Uyaynah”

At another place, he said:

وعقيل ثقة نبيل الحديث عَن الزُّهْرِيّ
“Uqayl is Thiqah, noble in Hadeeth, in narrating from Zuhri”
[Taareekh Ibn Ma’een, narrated by Ad-Daarimi (T. 21)]

At another place, he said:

أثبت من روى عن الزُّهْرِيّ: مالك، ثم معمر، ثم عقيل، ثم يونس، ثم شعيب، والأَوزاعِيّ، والزبيدي، وسفيان بن عُيَيْنَة، وكل هؤلاء ثقات
“The most accurate of those who narrated from Zuhri are: Maalik then Ma’mar, then Uqayl, then Yoonus, then Shu’ayb, al-Awzaa’ee, az-Zubaydee, and Sufyaan bin Uyaynah – and all these people are Thiqah”
[Su’aalaat Ibn al-Junayd (P. 11)]

5-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said:

عقيل ثقة
“Uqayl is Thiqah”

At another place, he said:

صالح الحديث، روايته مثل رواية أصحابه، لا بأس به
“He is Saalih al-Hadeeth, his narrations are like the narrations of his companions; there is nothing wrong in him”
[Su’aalaat al-Maymooni (373)]

6-    Imaam Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel al-Bukhaari (D. 256) narrated numerous narrations from him in his Saheeh

7-    Imaam Muslim bin al-Hajjaaj al-Neesaaboori (D. 261) narrated several narrations from him in his Saheeh

8-    Imaam Abu al-Hasan al-Ijlee (D. 261) said:

ثقة
“He is Thiqah”
[ Ath-Thiqaat by al-Ijlee (1/338)]

9-    Imaam Abu Zur’ah ar-Raazi (D. 264) was asked about him, so he said:

ثقة صدوق
“He is Thiqah Sadooq”

10-          Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi (D. 275) was asked as to who is more beloved to you: Uqayl or Yoonus? He replied:

عقيل احب إلى من يونس وعقيل لا بأس به
“Uqayl is more beloved to me, and there is nothing wrong in Uqayl”
[ Al-Jarh wat Ta'deel by Ibn Abi Haatim (7/43)]

Imaam Abu Haatim was also asked, Is Uqayl more beloved to you (in narrating from Zuhri) or Ma’mar? He replied:

عقيل اثبت كان صاحب كتاب وكان الزهري يكون بايلة وللزهرى هناك ضيعة فكان يكتب عنه هناك
“Uqayl is more Thabat as he possessed a book. And az-Zuhri used to reside in Aylah as he had a property there, so he (Uqayl) would write from him there”

11-          Imaam Ibn Khuzaymah (D. 311) narrated from him in his Saheeh
[See, H. 146, 969]

12-          Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) narrated several narrations from him in his Saheeh
[See, H. 745, 1456, 1592, 6607 etc]

Imaam Ibn Hibbaan also mentioned him in Ath-Thiqaat (7/305)

13-          Imaam Abu Abdullah al-Haakim al-Neesaaboori (D. 405) authenticated many of his narrations saying:

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجَاهُ»
“The chain of this hadeeth is Saheeh, and it is not narrated by them”
[ Al-Mustadrak Ala as-Saheehayn by al-Haakim (H. 2031, 3144, 4115, 5274, 8690)]

14-          Imaam Shams ud-Deen adh-Dhahabi (D. 748) said:

كان حافطاً ثبتاً حجة
“He was Haafidh Thabat Hujjah”
[ Al-Abar (1/152)]

At another place, he said:

كان إِمَامًا حَافِظًا ثَبْتًا ثِقَةً
“He is an Imaam Haafidh Thabat Thiqah”
[Taareekh al-Islaam by Dhahabi (9/223)]

At another place, he said:

حافظ صاحب كتاب
“He was a Haafidh and the possessor of book”
[Al-Kaashif (2/32)]

At another place, he said:

الحافظ الحجة
“He is a preserver and a Hujjah”
[Tadhkirat al-Huffaadh (1/121)]

At another place, he said:

الحَافِظُ، الإِمَامُ
“A preserver and an Imaam”
[Siyar A’laam al-Nabula (6/301)]

At another place, he said:

أحد الاثبات... ثبت حجة
“One of the Thabat narrators…. Thabat Hujjah”
[Meezaan al-I’tidaal (3/89)]

15-          Haafidh Khaleel bin Aybak as-Safdi (D. 764) – the Student of Dhahabi said:

كانَ إِمَامًا حَافِظًا ثبتا ثِقَة لَازم الزُّهْرِيّ سفرا وحضرا
“He was an Imaam Haafidh Thabat Thiqah, he firmly abode be Zuhri in travel as well as in residence”
[ Al-Waafi Bil-Wafiyaat (20/64)]

16-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said:

ثقة ثبت
“He is Thiqah Thabat”
[ Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb by Ibn Hajar (4665)]

Those who criticized him:

1-    According to Imaam Ahmed, Imaam Yahya bin Sa’eed al-Qattaan has placed an implicit ruling of weakness on Uqayl.
[See, Al-Ilal (49, 360)]

This ruling is, first of all, not clear.
Secondly, it’s against the Jumhoor.

Conclusion:


Uqayl bin Khaalid bin Aqeel is unanimously agreed upon to be Thiqah Thabat.
