Those who criticized him:
1-
Imaam
Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said:
“ضعيف الحديث”
“He is Da’eef
in hadeeth”

2-
Imaam
Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) : Imaam Abdullah bin Ahmad said,
“سَأَلت يحيى عَن هِشَام بن حُجَيْر فضعفه جدا”
“I asked Yahya
(bin Ma’een) about Hishaam bin Hujayr, so he weakened him severely”

Note: It
should be noted that Imaam Yahya bin Ma’een is a Mutashaddid and his Jarh is
not accepted without explanation as compared to the explicit Tawtheeq.
3-
Haafidh
Yahya bin Sa’eed al-Qattaan (D. 198) : Imaam Ali bin Abdullah
al-Madeeni said,
“قرأت على يحيى بن سعيد نا ابن جريج عن هشام بن حجير حديثا. قال
يحيى بن سعيد: خليق ان ادعه، قلت أضرب على حديثه، قال نعم.”
“I read upon
Yahya bin Sa’eed a hadeeth from Hishaam bin Hujayr through Ibn Jurayj. Yahya
bin Sa’eed said: ‘It is befitting that I should leave him.’ I asked, ‘Should I
cross out his hadeeth?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’”

Note: Imaam
Yahya bin Sa’eed al-Qattaan is one of the strictest critiques. His Jarh is not
acceptable without an explanation as compared to the explicit tawtheeq.
4-
Imaam
Abu Haatim ar-Raazi (D. 275) said:
“مكى يكتب حديثه”
“Makki, write
his narrations (i.e. in Mutaabi’aat)”

Note: Imaam
Abu Haatim is also a Mutashaddid and his Jarh is also not accepted without an
explanation against the explicit Tawtheeq. He is known for using this term for
several other Thiqah narrators.
Note: Uqaylee’s
merely mentioning him in his ad-Du’afa does not necessitate his jarh upon him
because the authors of the books of Du’afa include all those narrators in their
books that have been criticized even though they may be thiqah. So merely being
mentioned in ad-Du’afa is not a Tad’eef.
Those who praised him:

Bukhaari (D. 259) narrated from him in his Saheeh.
2-
Imaam
Muslim bin al-Hajjaaj al-Neesaaboori (D. 261) narrated from him in his
Saheeh.
3-
Imaam
Muhammad bin Sa’d (D. 230) said:
“وكان ثقة وله أحاديث”
“He was Thiqah
and he had a number of narrations”

Imaam
Abu al-Hasan al-Ijlee (D. 261) said:
“ثقة، صاحب سنة”
“He is Thiqah,
the man of Sunnah”

Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) mentioned him in Kitaab ath-Thiqaat (7/567 T.
11503)
6- Imaam Ibn Khuzaymah (D. 311) narrated from him in his Saheeh.

Imaam
Zakariyya bin Yahya as-Saaji (D. 307) said:
“صدوق”
“He is Sadooq.”

Imaam
Shams ud-Deen adh-Dhahabi (D. 748) said:
“مكي ثقة”
“Makki Thiqah”

Al-Kaashif (6058) ]
And he also
mentioned him in his book, “Man Tukullima Fihi wa Huwa Muwaththaq”
(P. 187) in which he mentioned the names of those narrators who were criticized
but they were Thiqah or Saalih al-Hadeeth according to the most authentic view.
9-
Haafidh
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said:
“صدوق له أوهام”
“He was Sadooq
and had (a few) errors”

Note: It
is known that every Thiqah or Hasan ul-Hadeeth narrator makes some mistakes,
which does not make him Da’eef, rather only those of his narrations will be
weakened in which he has proven to be mistaken.
Note: It is from the
strengthening of his condition that although he has a less number of
narrations, but in none of them is he alone in narrating. He is always
supported by another person, from what I have seen Wallaahu a’lam.
Conclusion:
Hishaam is Hasan ul-Hadeeth at
the least and his hadeeth is Hasan Lidhaatih.
