Allaamah
Abu Ja’far at-Tahaawi al-Hanafi rahimahullah said that Abu Yoosuf was born (in
Koofah) on 113 AH [Taareekh Baghdaad (14/247)].

Kawthari Kadh-dhaab and some
other people have tried to push hard to prove his date of birth to be 93 AH but
there is no proof for that.
Death: 5
Rabi’ uth-Thaani 182 AH during the Caliphate of Haaroon ur-Rasheed.
Teachers: Some
of his teachers in Hadeeth include: Hishaam bin Urwah, Ataa bin as-Saa’ib,
Yahya bin Sa’eed, Yazeed bin Abi Ziyaad, Sulemaan al-A’mash, Abu Ishaaq
ash-Shaybaani, Hajjaaj bin Artaat, Ubaydullah bin Umar and many other
Muhadditheen.
While in Fiqh, he was the
companion of Imaam Abu Haneefah and learned Qiyaas and Raaye from him, due to
which some people have criticized him.
Students: Following
Muhadditheen have narrated from him: Ibn Samaa’ah, Yahya bin Ma’een, Ahmed bin
Hanbal, Ali bin al-Ja’d, Ahmed bin Manee’, Ali bin Muslim at-Toosi, Asad bin
Faraat, Amr an-Naaqid, and many other people.
Status:
Qaadhi
Abu Yoosuf is differed upon with respect to Jarh and Ta’deel. However, taking
under consideration the principles of Jarh and Ta’deel, what seems to be the
most authentic view is that he is at least Hasan ul-Hadeeth in the narration of
Hadeeth.
