Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

Those who praised him:

1-    Imaam Muhammad bin Sa’d (D. 230) said:

وَكَانَ ثِقَةً مَأْمُونًا كَثِيرَ الْحَدِيثِ, يُدَلِّسُ وَيبَيَّنَ تَدْلِيسُهُ وَكَانَ صَاحِبَ سُنَّةٍ وَجَمَاعَةٍ
“He was Thiqah Ma’moon Katheer ul-Hadeeth, he commits Tadlees and he has showed/clarified his tadlees, and he was a man of Sunnah and Jama’ah”
[ Tabaqaat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa'd (6/394-395)]

Note: The discussion on his Tadlees is coming ahead, in-shaa-Allaah.

2-    Imaam Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) was asked who is more beloved to you Abu Usaamah or Abu Abdah, so he said:

ما منهما إلا ثقة
“There is nothing in both of them except reliability”
[ Taareekh Ibn Ma'een, narrated by ad-Daarimi (# 242)]

3-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said:

كان ثبتًا لا يكاد يخطىء
“He was Thabat and he hardly ever made mistakes”
[ Al-Ilal wa Ma'rifat ur-Rijaal by Ahmed, narrated by Abdullah (745)]

At another place, his son Abdullah asked him about Abu Usaamah and Abu Aasim as to which of them is more Thabat in Hadeeth? So he replied:

“Abu Usaamah is hundred times more Thabat than the likes of Abu Aasim…. Abu Usaamah was Thabat (&) Saheeh ul-Kitaab”
[Al-Ilal (772 & 5980)]

Imaam Ahmed said that Abu Usaamah said:

كتبت بيدي مئة ألف حديث
“I have written hundred thousand narrations with my hands”
[Al-Ilal (5397)]

4-    Imaam Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel al-Bukhaari (D. 256) narrated and took evidence from him in his Saheeh.

5-    Imaam Abu al-Hasan al-Ijlee (D. 261) said:

ثقة، وكان يعد من حكماء أصحاب الحديث
“He was Thiqah and he was counted among the elders of the people of Hadeeth (i.e. Ahl al-Hadeeth)”
[ Ath-Thiqaat by al-Ijlee (1/130)]

6-    Imaam Muslim bin al-Hajjaaj al-Neesaaboori (D. 261) narrated and took evidence from him in his Saheeh

7-    Imaam Ibn Khuzaymah (D. 311) narrated from him in his Saheeh

8-    Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) narrated from him in his Saheeh, and he mentioned him in his Kitaab ath-Thiqaat (# 7453)

9-    Imaam Ibn Abi Haatim ar-Raazi (D. 327) said:

حَمَّادِ بنِ أُسَامةَ الكُوفيِّ أحدِ الثقاتِ
“Hammaad bin Usaamah al-Koofi is one of the Thiqah narrators”
[ Al-Ilal by Ibn Abi Haatim (1/55)]

10-          Imaam Abu Abdullah al-Haakim al-Neesaaboori (D. 405) authenticated his narrations saying:

“This hadeeth is Saheeh upon the conditions of Shaykhayn”
[ Al-Mustadrak Ala as-Saheehayn by al-Haakim (H. 1408, 1280, 4402)]

11-          Imaam Abu al-Hasan ad-Daaraqutni (D. 385) said:

ثقة
“Thiqah”
[ Al-Ilal by Ad-Daaraqutni]

At another place, he said:

ثقة حافظ
“Thiqah Haafidh”
[Al-Ilal with reference to Mawsoo’ah Aqwaal ad-Daaraqutni (1/225)]

12-          Imaam Shams ud-Deen adh-Dhahabi (D. 748) said:

الحَافِظُ، الثَّبْتُ
“Al-Haafidh ath-Thabat”
[ Siyar A’laam al-Nabula (9/277)]

13-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said:

ثقة ثبت
“Thiqah Thabat”
[ Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb]

And many others have declared Thiqah! In fact there is consensus on his Thaqaahat and Faqaahat.

Those who criticized him:

After the Tawtheeq of Jumhoor, the Jarh of Sufyaan bin Wakee’ (Weak) and Abu al-Fath al-Azdi (Weak) etc is not harmful.

Hammaad bin Usaamah and Tadlees

1-    Abu al-Fath al-Azdi narrated from Al-Mu’eeti that he said:

كان كثير التدليس ثم بعد تركه
“He was Katheer ut-Tadlees then he abandoned it”
[Al-Mudalliseen by Ibn al-Iraaqi (1/46), Tabaqaat al-Mudalliseen by Ibn Hajar (1/30), etc]

Note: This saying is weak as Abu al-Fath al-Azdi is weak and accused of fabricating hadeeth.

2-    Imaam Ibn Sa’d said:

وَكَانَ ثِقَةً مَأْمُونًا كَثِيرَ الْحَدِيثِ, يُدَلِّسُ وَيبَيَّنَ تَدْلِيسُهُ وَكَانَ صَاحِبَ سُنَّةٍ وَجَمَاعَةٍ
“He was Thiqah Ma’moon Katheer ul-Hadeeth, he commits Tadlees and he has showed/clarified his tadlees, and he was a man of Sunnah and Jama’ah”
[ Tabaqaat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa'd (6/394-395)]

Note: There is nothing proven about his Tadlees other than this saying of Ibn Sa’d and this saying of Ibn Sa’d proves that his ‘An’ana is mahmoolah ala as-samaa and that he is not a Mudallis because the one whose tadlees is shown (as to whom he did the tadlees from) then it is not said about him that he is a Mudallis, therefore, he is free from Tadlees.
[See, Fath al-Mubeen by Shaykh Zubayr Ali Za’ee (P. 38)]

Conclusion:

Imaam Hammaad bin Usaamah is Thiqah Thabat Faqeeh.
