Abu Yahya al-Qattaat, Zadaan


Name:

أَبُو يَحْيَى الْقَتَّاتُ الْكُوفِيُّ.

Abu Yahya al-Qattaat al-Koofi

Imaam Dhahabi said:

فِي اسْمِهِ أَقْوَالٌ: يَزِيدُ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَمُسْلِمٌ، وَعِمْرَانَ، وَالأَصَحُّ زَاذَانُ.
“There are different sayings about his name such as: Yazeed, Abdur Rahmaan, Muslim, Imraan, and the most authentic of them is Zadaan”

Tabaqah: 6 - From the contemporaries of Minor Taabi'een

Narrated by: Al-Bukhaari in Adab al-Mufrad Abu Dawood Tirmidhi Ibn Maajah

Teachers: Habeeb bin Abi Thaabit, Ataa bin Abi Ribaah, Mujaahid bin Jabar al-Makki etc

Students: Israa’eel bin Yoonus, Ziyaad bin Khaythamah, Sufyaan ath-Thawree, Sulemaan al-A’mash, Abu Bakr bin Ayyaash, Abu Yahya at-Ta’weel and others.

Status: Da'eef

Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

Those who criticized him:

1-    Qaadhi Shareek bin Abdullah al-Nakha’ee (D. 177 or 178) used to weaken Abu Yahya al-Qattaat as Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said:

كَانَ شَرِيكٌ يُضَعِّفُ أَبَا يَحْيَى الْقَتَّاتَ
“Qaadhi Shareek (Sadooq, Hasan ul-Hadeeth) used to weaken Abu Yahya al-Qattaat”

2-    Imaam Muhammad bin Sa’d (D. 230) said:

وفيه ضعف
“And there is weakness in him”
[ Tabaqaat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa'd (6/329)]

3-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said:

رَوَى عَنْهُ إِسْرَائِيلُ أَحَادِيثَ مَنَاكِيرَ جِدًّا... هَذَا مِنْ قِبَلِ أَبِي يَحْيَى
“Israa’eel (bin Yoonus) has narrated many severely Munkar narrations from him… and this was due to Abu Yahya (not Israa’eel)”

4-    Imaam Abu Zur’ah ar-Raazi (D. 264) was asked by Al-Barza’ee about Abu Yahya al-Qattaat, so he said:

ضعيف الحديث
“He is Da’eef in hadeeth”
[ Ad-Du'afa of Abu Zur'ah ar-Raazi (2/431)]

5-    Imaam Al-Nasaa’ee (D. 303) said:

لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيّ
“He is not strong”
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by al-Nasaa'ee (1/116)]

6-    Imaam Abu Ja’far al-Ukaylee (D. 322) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa.

7-    Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) said:

مِمَّن فحش خَطؤُهُ وَكثر وهمه حَتَّى سلك غير مَسْلَك الْعُدُول فِي الرِّوَايَات
“He was among those who made grave mistakes and grew abundant in errors until he strayed to the path other than the path of reliable ones in narration”

8-    Imaam Abu Ahmed bin Adee al-Jarjaani (D. 365) said:

يروي عنه الأَعْمَش وإسرائيل وعامة حديثه يرويها إسرائيل وفي حديثه بَعْضُ مَا فِيهِ إِلا أَنَّهُ يكتب حديثه
“Al-A’mash and Israa’eel have narrated from him and most of his narrations are narrated by Israa’eel and in some of his narrations there is what it contains (i.e. weakness) except that his narrations are written down (i.e. for Mutaabi’ah)”

9-    Haafidh Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi (D. 456) said while grading a hadeeth:

فِيهَا أَبُو يَحْيَى الْقَتَّاتُ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ
“It contains Abu Yahya al-Qattaat, and he is Da’eef”
[ Al-Muhalla by Ibn Hazm (2/245)]

10-          While narrating from Haafidh Abdul Haqq al-Ashbaylee (D. 581), Haafidh Ibn al-Qattaan al-Faasi (D. 628) said:

أَبُو يحيى القَتَّات ضَعِيف الحَدِيث
“Abu Yahya al-Qattaat is Da’eef in Hadeeth”
[ Bayaan al-Wahem wal Ayhaam by Ibn al-Qattaan (5/332)]

11-          Haafidh Ibn al-Jawzee (D. 597) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by Ibn al-Jawzee (1/273, 2/93)]

12-          Haafidh Noor ud-Deen al-Haythami (D. 807) said:

وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ عِنْدَ الْجُمْهُورِ
“And he is Da’eef according to the Jumhoor”
[ Majma az-Zawaaid by Al-Haythami (7/200, 10/74)]

13-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said:

وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ
“And he is Da’eef”
[ Fath al-Baari by Ibn Hajar (1/478), Al-Talkhees al-Habeer (1/535)]

In another place, he said:

لين الحديث
“Layyin ul-Hadeeth (mild in hadeeth)”
[Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb (8444)]

14-          Allaamah Badr ud-Deen Aynee al-Hanafi (D. 855) said:

وكان فاحش الخطأ
“He used to commit grave mistakes”
[ Maghaani ul-Akhyaar by Al-Aynee (3/471)]

Those who praised him:


1-    Imaam Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr (D. 234) said:

وابو يحيى الْقَتَّاتُ حَسَنُ الْحَدِيثِ
“Abu Yahya al-Qattaat is Hasan ul-Hadeeth”
[ Al-Ma'rifah wal Taareekh by Ya'qoob bin Sufyaan (2/797)]

2-    Imaam Ya’qoob bin Sufyaan al-Fasawi (D. 277) said:

لا بأس به
“There is nothing wrong in him”
[ Al-Ma'rifah wal Taareekh by Ya'qoob bin Sufyaan (3/102)]

3-    Imaam Abu Bakr al-Bazzaar (D. 313) said:

وَأَبُو يَحْيَى كُوفِيٌّ مَعْرُوفٌ، لا يُعْلَمُ بِهِ بَأْسٌ، رَوَى عَنْهُ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ
“And Abu Yahya is the famous Koofi, nothing wrong is known about him, a group of people of knowledge have narrated from him”
[ Kashf ul-Astaar (4/3 H. 3058)]

Contradictory Opinions:

1-    Imaam Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) said:

لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْس
“There is nothing wrong in him”
[ Min Kalaam Abi Zakariyyah Yahya bin Ma’een (1/79)]

And

ثقة
“Thiqah”
[ Taareekh Ibn Ma'een, narrated by ad-Daarimi (964)]


While in another place, he said:

ضَعِيفٌ
“He is Da’eef”
[ Al-Kaamil by Ibn Adee (4/210), Ad-Du'afa al-Kabeer by al-Ukaylee (2/392), also see, Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel (3/433)]

And

في حديثه ضعف
“There is weakness in his hadeeth”
[ Taareekh Ibn Ma'een, narrated by ad-Dauri (2/731)]


Conclusion:

Abu Yahya al-Qattaat is Da’eef in Hadeeth.
