Ishaaq bin Ibraaheem al-Hunaynee, Abu Ya’qoob al-Madani

Narrated by: Abu Dawood Ibn Maajah

Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

Those who criticized him:

1-    Imaam Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel al-Bukhaari (D. 256) said:

فِي حديثه نَظَرٌ
“His hadeeth is fishy”
[ Taareekh al-Kabeer by al-Bukhaari (1/379)]

2-    Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi (D. 275) said:

رأيت أحمد بن صالح لا يرضى الحنيني
“I saw (Imaam) Ahmed bin Saalih (al-Misri), he was unpleased with al-Hunaynee”
[ Al-Jarh wat Ta'deel by Ibn Abi Haatim (2/208)]

3-    Imaam Abu Zur’ah ar-Raazi (D. 264) said:

صالح
“He is pious”

While explaining this saying of Imaam Abu Zur’ah, Al-Barza’ee (his student) said:

يعني في دينه لا في حديثه
“He means that he is pious in Deen but not in Hadeeth”
[ Su’aalaat al-Barza’ee li Abi Zur’ah ar-Raazi (3/794)]

4-    Imaam Al-Nasaa’ee (D. 303) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa and said:

لَيْسَ بِثِقَة
“He is not Thiqah”
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by al-Nasaa'ee (1/18)]

5-    Imaam Abu Bakr al-Bazzaar (D. 313) said:

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ بِالْحَافِظِ
“He was not a Preserver;”
[ Reference]

In another place, he said:

فَكَفَّ وَاضْطَرَبَ حَدِيثُهُ
“He lost his sight at the end of his age, and started committing Idtiraab in his hadeeth”
[ Al-Baher al-Zakhkhaar: Musnad al-Bazzaar (1/400)]

6-    Imaam Abu Ja’far al-Ukaylee (D. 322) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa
[ Ad-Du'afa al-Kabeer by al-Ukaylee (1/97 T. 113)]

7-    Imaam Abu Ahmed bin Adee al-Jarjaani (D. 365) said:

وَالْحُنَيْنِيُّ مَعَ ضَعْفِهِ يَكْتُبُ حَدِيثَهُ
“And the hadeeth of al-Hunaynee, despite his weakness, is written down”
[ Al-Kaamil by Ibn Adee (1/555)]

8-    Imaam Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi (D. 458) said while commenting on a hadeeth:

وَإِسْحَاقُ يَنْفَرِدُ بِهِ, وَفِي حَدِيثِهِ ضَعْفٌ
“Ishaaq is alone in narrating it, and there is weakness in his hadeeth”
[ Sunan al-Kubra lil Bayhaqi (9/455 H. 19075)]

9-    Haafidh Ibn al-Jawzee (D. 597) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa.
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by Ibn al-Jawzee (1/97)]

10-          Imaam Shams ud-Deen adh-Dhahabi (D. 748) said:

إسحاق هالك
“Ishaaq is unreliable”
[ Talkhees al-Mustadrak by Dhahabi (H. 7526)]

At another place, he said:

ضعفوه
“They have weakened him”
[ Al-Kaashif by Dhahabi (1/234)]

At another place, he said:

ضعيف
“He is Da’eef”
[Al-Muqtana fi Sard al-Kunaa by Dhahabi (2/157)]

At another place, he said:

متفق على ضعفه
“He is agreed upon to be Da’eef”
[Deewaan ad-Du’afa by Dhahabi (1/26)]

11-          Haafidh Ibn Abdil Haadi (D. 744) said:

قلت: والحنينيُّ ليس بمرضيٍّ عندهم
“I say: Al-Hunaynee is not pleasing according to them”
[ Tanqeeh al-Tahqeeq by Ibn Abdil Haadi (3/17)]

12-          Haafidh Ibn al-Mulaqqin (D. 804) said:

قلت: والحنيني ضَعَّفُوهُ
“I say: And they have weakened al-Hunaynee”
[ Al-Badar al-Muneer by Ibn al-Mulaqqin (5/458)]

13-          Haafidh Noor ud-Deen al-Haythami (D. 807) said:

وَقَدْ ضَعَّفَهُ الْجُمْهُورُ
“And he is weakened by the Jumhoor”
[ Majma az-Zawaaid by Al-Haythami (8/162, 10/242)]

14-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said:

أحد الضُّعَفَاء
“He is one of the weak narrators”
[ Fath al-Baari by Ibn Hajar (9/524)]

15-          Allaamah Mughaltaai al-Hanafi has said that besides Al-Ukaylee: As-Saaji, Ibn al-Jaarood, Abu al-Arab al-Qayrawaani, and Abu al-Qaasim al-Balkhi have also mentioned him in their collection of weak narrators, wallahu a’lam
[ Ikmaal Tahdheeb al-Kamaal by Mughaltaai (2/79)]

Those who praised him:

1-    Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) mentioned him in Ath-Thiqaat and said:

كَانَ مِمَّن يخطىء
“He was among those who err”
[ Ath-Thiqaat by Ibn Hibbaan (8/115)]

2-    Imaam Abu Abdullah al-Haakim al-Neesaaboori (D. 405) said while commenting on a hadeeth:

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ»
“The chain of this hadeeth is Saheeh, and it is not narrated by them”
[ Al-Mustadrak Ala as-Saheehayn by al-Haakim (H. 7526)]

Conclusion:

Ishaaq bin Ibraaheem al-Hunaynee is weak.
