Ahwas bin Hakeem bin Umayr al-Himsi


Name:

الأحوص بن حكيم بن عمير و هو : عمرو بن الأسود ، العنسى و يقال الهمدانى ، الحمصى و قيل الدمشقى ( و الصحيح أنه حمصى )

Al-Ahwas bin Hakeem bin Umayr and he is: Amr bin al-Aswad, al-Anasi, and it is said: Al-Hamdaani, al-Himsi, and it is said: Ad-Dimashqi (but the most authentic saying is that he is Himsi)

Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

Those who criticized him:

1-    Imaam Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel al-Bukhaari (D. 256) said that Imaam Ali bin Abdullah al-Madeeni (D. 234) said:

وأما يحيى فلم يرو عَنِ الأحوص
“As for Yahya (bin Sa’eed al-Qattaan), he would not narrate from Al-Ahwas”

2-    Imaam Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) said:

«ليس بشيء»
“He is nothing”
[ Su'alaat Ibn al-Junayd (1/312), Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel (2/328), Ad-Du'afa al-Kabeer by al-Ukaylee (1/120), Al-Kaamil (2/113)]

In the narration of Ibn Tahmaan, he said:

لَيْسَ بِثِقَة وَلَا مَأْمُون
“He is neither Thiqah nor Ma’moon”
[ Min Kalaam Abi Zakariyyah Yahya bin Ma’een fi ar-Rijaal (1/47)]

3-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said:

ضعيف لا يسوى حديثه شيئًا
“He is Da’eef; his hadeeth equates to nothing”
[ Su’aalaat Ibn Haani (2159)]

At another place, he said:

الأحوص بن حكيم واه
“Al-Ahwas bin Hakeem is worthless”
[ Ad-Du'afa al-Kabeer by al-Ukaylee (1/120), Chain Saheeh]

At another place, he said:

لا يروى حديثه، يرفع الأحاديث إلى النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم -
“Do not narrate his hadeeth; he attributes narrations to the Prophet (peace be upon him).”

4-    Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi (D. 275) said:

الأحوص بن حكيم ليس بقوي، منكر الحديث، وكان ابن عيينة يقدم الأحوص على ثور في الحديث فغلط ابن عيينة في تقديم الأحوص على ثور، ثور صدوق، والاحوص منكر الحديث
“Al-Ahwas bin Hakeem is not strong, Munkar ul-Hadeeth; Ibn Uyaynah used to prefer him over Thawr in Hadeeth; thus Ibn Uyaynah erred in preferring him over Thawr, for Thawr is truthful while Al-Ahwas is Munkar ul-Hadeeth”

5-    Imaam Ya’qoob bin Sufyaan al-Fasawi (D. 277) said:

وَحَدِيثُهُ لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ
“And his hadeeth is not strong”
[ Al-Ma'rifah wal Taareekh by Ya'qoob bin Sufyaan (2/461)]

6-    Imaam Ibraaheem bin Ya’qoob al-Juzjaani (D. 259) said:

الأحوص بن حكيم ليس بالقوي في الحديث
“Al-Ahwas bin Hakeem is not strong in Hadeeth”
[ Ahwaal ur-Rijaal by al-Juzjaani (1/293)]

7-    Imaam Al-Nasaa’ee (D. 303) said:

ضَعِيف شَامي
“He is Da’eef; Shaami”
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by al-Nasaa'ee (1/20)]

8-    Imaam Abu Ja’far al-Ukaylee (D. 322) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa
[ Ad-Du'afa al-Kabeer by al-Ukaylee (1/120 T. 145)]

9-    Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) said:

يَرْوِي الْمَنَاكِير عَن الْمَشَاهِير وَكَانَ ينتقص عَلِي بْن أَبِي طَالِب تَركه يَحْيَى الْقَطَّان وَغَيره
“He narrated Munkar narrations from the famous narrators; he used to ridicule Ali bin Abi Taalib; Yahya al-Qattaan and others have abandoned him”
[ Al-Majroheen by Ibn Hibbaan (1/175)]

Later he said:

وَاهٍ لَا يَشْتَغِلُ بِرِوَايَتِهِ
“He is worthless, do not waste time with his narration”
[ Al-Majroheen by Ibn Hibbaan (1/176)]

At another place, he said:

لَا يعْتَبر بروايته
“His narration is relied upon”
[Ath-Thiqaat (5/131)]

10-          Imaam Abu Ahmed bin Adee al-Jarjaani (D. 365) said:

وَهو مِمَّنْ يُكْتَبُ حَدِيثُهُ وَقَدْ حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنَ الثقات مثل بن عُيَينة وَعِيسَى بْنُ يُونُس وَمَرْوَانُ الْفَزَارِيُّ وَغَيْرُهُمْ وَلَيْسَ لَهُ فِيمَا يَرْوِيهِ شَيْءٌ مُنْكَرٌ إِلا أَنَّهُ يأتي بأسانيد، لاَ يُتَابَعُ عَليها
“And he is among those whose narrations are written down (for Mutaabi’ah), certainly a group of reliable people have narrated from him such as Ibn Uyaynah, Eesa bin Yoonus, Marwaan al-Fazaari, and others; and there is nothing, in which he has narrated, anything Munkar except that he comes up with chains which are not followed.”
[ Al-Kaamil by Ibn Adee (2/119)]

At another place, while commenting on a hadeeth, Imaam Ibn Adee said:

وَرَوَاهُ الأَحْوَصُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ مَعَ ضَعْفِهِ عَنْ...
“And it is narrated by Al-Ahwas bin Hakeem, despite his weakness, from….”
[ Al-Kaamil by Ibn Adee (3/287)]

11-          Imaam Abu Hafs Umar bin Shaaheen (D. 385) mentioned him in Taareekh Asmaa ad-Du’afa wal Kadh-dhaabeen.
[ 1/58]

12-          Imaam Abu al-Hasan ad-Daaraqutni (D. 385) said:

يعتبر به إذا حدث عنه ثقة
“He is relied upon (in Mutaabi’aat) if the one narrating from him is Thiqah”
[Su’aalaat al-Barqaani (1/16)]

At another place, he said:

منكر الحديث
“He is Munkar ul-Hadeeth”
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by ad-Daaraqutni (1/259)]

13-          Imaam Abu Nu’aym al-Asbahaani (D. 430) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa and said:

قَالَ عَليّ بن الْمَدِينِيّ لَا يكْتب حَدِيثه
“Ali bin al-Madeeni said: Do not write his narration”
[ Ad-Du'afa by Abu Nu'aym (1/63)]

14-          Imaam Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi (D. 456) said:

وَهُوَ سَاقِطٌ
“And he is Saaqit”
[ Al-Muhalla by Ibn Hazm (5/7)]

At another place, he said:
لَيْسَ بِشَيْءٍ
“He is nothing”
[ Al-Muhalla by Ibn Hazm (6/88)]

15-          Haafidh Ibn al-Jawzee (D. 597) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by Ibn al-Jawzee (1/92)]

16-          Imaam Shams ud-Deen adh-Dhahabi (D. 748) said:

ضعف
“Weak”
[ Al-Kaashif by Dhahabi (1/230)]

17-          Haafidh Abu al-Fadl al-Iraaqi (D. 806) said:

وَهُوَ ضَعِيف
“And he is Da’eef”
[ Takhreej Ahaadeeth al-Ihyaa (1/142)]

18-          Haafidh Noor ud-Deen al-Haythami (D. 807) said:

وَضَعَّفَهُ الْجُمْهُورُ
“And he is weakened by Jumhoor”
[ Majma az-Zawaaid by Al-Haythami (3/42)]

19-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said:

ضعيف الحفظ
“He has weak memory”
[ Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb by Ibn Hajar (1/96 T. 290)]

20-          Haafidh Shihaab ud-Deen al-Busayri (D. 840) graded a hadeeth saying:

هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ ضَعِيفٌ لِضَعْفِ الْأَحْوَصِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ
“This chain is weak due to the weakness of Al-Ahwas bin Hakeem”
[ Ittihaaf al-Khayrah (1/493) etc]

21-          Allaamah Noor ud-Deen Ibn Iraaq al-Kinaani (D. 963) said:

الأَحْوَصُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ مَتْرُوكٌ
“Al-Ahwas bin Hakeem is Matrook”
[ Tanzeeh ush-Sharee’ah (2/36)]

22-          According to Mughaltaai al-Hanafi, Imaam Ibn al-Jaarood and Abu Al-Arab al-Qayrawaani have also mentioned Al-Ahwas in their books of Ad-Du’afa (weak narrators).

Those who praised him:

1-    Imaam Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel al-Bukhaari (D. 256) said that Imaam Ali bin Abdullah al-Madeeni (D. 234) said:

"كَانَ ابْن عيينة يفضل الأحوص على ثور فِي الحديث
“(Sufyaan) Ibn Uyaynah used to prefer Al-Ahwas over Thawr in Hadeeth”
[ Taareekh al-Kabeer by al-Bukhaari (2/58)]

At another place, Imaam Sufyaan Ibn Uyaynah said:

وكان ثقة
“He was Thiqah”
[Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel by Ibn Abi Haatim (2/297), Chain Saheeh]

2-    Imaam Ali bin Abdullah al-Madeeni (D. 234) said:

والأحوص بن حكيم ثقة
“And al-Ahwas bin Hakeem is Thiqah”
[ Taareekh Dimashq by Ibn Asaakir (7/356), Chain Saheeh]

3-    Imaam Abu al-Hasan al-Ijlee (D. 261) said:

شَامي لَا بَأْس بِهِ
“He is a Shaami; there is nothing wrong in him”
[ Ath-Thiqaat by al-Ijlee (1/213)]

4-    Imaam Abu Abdullah al-Haakim al-Neesaaboori (D. 405) said while grading a hadeeth:

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ، وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ»
“The chain of this hadeeth is Saheeh, and it is not narrated by them.”
[ Al-Mustadrak Ala as-Saheehayn by al-Haakim (H. 1897)]

Conclusion:

Al-Ahwas bin Hakeem is Da’eef, Munkar ul-Hadeeth.
