Saalih bin Muhammad bin Zaa’idah, Abu Waaqid as-Sagheer

Those who criticized him:

1-    Imaam Sulemaan bin Harb (D. 224) abandoned him

2-    Imaam Ali bin Abdullah al-Madeeni (D. 234) was asked by Imaam Ibn Abi Shaybah about Saalih bin Muhammad bin Zaa’idah, so he said:

كَانَ ضَعِيفا
“He was Da’eef”
[ Su'aalaat Ibn Abi Shaybah Li-Ibn al-Madeeni (1/96 T. 86)]

3-    Imaam Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) said:

صَالِحُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زَائِدَةَ لَيْسَ حَدِيثُهُ بِذَاكَ
“The hadeeth of Saalih bin Muhammad bin Zaa’idah is not really reliable”

In another place, he said:

ضَعِيفُ الْحَدِيثِ
“He is Da’eef in Hadeeth”

4-    Imaam Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel al-Bukhaari (D. 256) was asked by Imaam Tirmidhi about one of the hadeeth, so he said:

إِنَّمَا رَوَى هَذَا صَالِحُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زَائِدَةَ، وَهُوَ أَبُو وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيُّ وَهُوَ مُنْكَرُ الحَدِيثِ
“This is only narrated by Saalih bin Muhammad bin Zaa’idah, and he is Abu Waaqid al-Laythi, and he is Munkar ul-Hadeeth”

5-    Imaam Abu Zur’ah ar-Raazi (D. 264) was asked by Al-Barza’ee about Saalih bin Muhammad bin Zaa’idah, so he said:

ضعيف الحديث
“He is Da’eef in Hadeeth”
[ Ad-Du'afa of Abu Zur'ah ar-Raazi (2/359)]

6-    Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi (D. 275) was asked by his son about Saalih bin Muhammad bin Zaa’idah, so he said:

ليس بقوي الحديث، تركه سليمان بن حرب، وكان صاحب غزو منكر الحديث.
“He is not strong in Hadeeth; Sulemaan bin Harb abandoned him; and he was a man of expedition, Munkar ul-Hadeeth”

7-    Imaam Abu al-Hasan al-Ijlee (D. 261) said:

يكتب حديثه، وليس بالقوي.
“Write his narrations, and he is not strong”
[ Ath-Thiqaat by al-Ijlee (1/226)]

8-    Imaam Abu Abdur Rahmaan Al-Nasaa’ee (D. 303) said:

لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيّ
“He is not strong”
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by al-Nasaa'ee (1/57)]

9-    Imaam Abu Ahmed bin Adee al-Jarjaani (D. 365) said:

وبعض أحاديثه مستقيمة وبعضها فيه إنكار وليس لَهُ من الْحَدِيث إلا القليل، وَهو من الضعفاء الذين يكتب حديثهم.
“And some of his narrations are straight while some of them contain oddness; and he does not have except a few narrations; and he is among those weak narrators whose narrations are written down (i.e. for Mutaabi’ah)”

10-          Imaam Abu Ja’far al-Ukaylee (D. 322) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa
[ Ad-Du'afa al-Kabeer by al-Ukaylee (2/202)]

11-          Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) said:

كَانَ مِمَّن يقلب الْأَخْبَار والأسانيد وَلَا يعلم ويسند الْمَرَاسِيل وَلَا يفهم فَلَمَّا كثر ذَلِكَ من حَدِيثه وفحش اسْتحق التّرْك
“He was among those who would alter the report and chains while he did not know; and (often) connect the disconnected Mursal narrations while he did not perceive; so when he started doing that in abundance in his hadeeth and exceeded, he deserved to be abandoned”
[ Al-Majroheen by Ibn Hibbaan (1/367)]

12-          Imaam Abu al-Hasan ad-Daaraqutni (D. 385) said:

وَأَبُو وَاقِدٍ هَذَا ضَعِيفٌ.
“And this Abu Waaqid is Da’eef”
[ Al-Ilal ad-Daaraqutni (2/52) & Ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen (290)]

13-          Imaam Abu Hafs Umar bin Shaaheen (D. 385) mentioned him in Taareekh Asmaa ad-Du’afa wal Kadh-dhaabeen
[ 1/110]

14-          Imaam Ibn Abdil Barr al-Andalusi (D. 463) said:

ليس بالقوي عندهم.
“He is not strong according to them”
[ Al-Istaghnaa by Ibn Abdil Barr (2/565)]

15-          Haafidh Ibn al-Jawzee (D. 597) mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen
[ 2/50]

16-          Haafidh Abu al-Fadl al-Iraaqi (D. 806) said:

وَصَالِحٌ هَذَا ضَعَّفَهُ الْجُمْهُورُ
“And this Saalih is weakened by the Jumhoor”
[ Tarh at-Tathreeb by al-Iraaqi (5/96)]

17-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said:

ضعيف من الخامسة ومرة: أَحَدِ الضُّعَفَاءِ
“He is Da’eef from the fifth level” and in another place he said: “He is one of the weak narrators”
[ Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb (2885) & Fath al-Baari (6/187) respectively]

18-          Haafidh Noor ud-Deen al-Haythami (D. 807) said:

وَضَعَّفَهُ أَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ ومرة: ضَعِيفٌ
“He is weakened by most of the people” and in another place he said: “He is Da’eef”
[ Majma az-Zawaaid by Al-Haythami (7/210 & 10/41)]

19-          Haafidh Ibn al-Mulaqqin (D. 804) said:

وَصَالح هَذَا ضعفه جماعات بل الْجُمْهُور
“And this Saalih is weakened by groups, in fact, by the Jumhoor”
[ Al-Badar al-Muneer by Ibn al-Mulaqqin (9/140)]

20-          Haafidh Shihaab ud-Deen al-Busayri (D. 840) said while grading a hadeeth:

هَذَا إِسْنَاد فِيهِ أَبُو وَاقد واسْمه صَالح بن مُحَمَّد بن رائدة اللَّيْثِيّ وَهُوَ ضَعِيف
“This chain contains Abu Waaqid in it, and his name is Saalih bin Muhammad bin Zaa’idah al-Laythi, and he is Da’eef”
[ Misbaah uz-Zajaajah (3/111)]

Those who praised him:

1-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said:

مَا أرى بِهِ بَأْسا
“I do not see anything wrong in him”
[ Al-Ilal wa Ma'rifat ur-Rijaal by Ahmed, narrated by Abdullah (2/488) & Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel by Ibn Abi Haatim (4/412)]

2-    Imaam Abu Abdullah al-Haakim al-Neesaaboori (D. 405) authenticated his hadeeth saying:

هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ
“The chain of this hadeeth is Saheeh and it is not narrated by them (i.e. Bukhaari and Muslim)”
[ Al-Mustadrak Ala as-Saheehayn by al-Haakim (H. 2438, 2584)]

Conclusion:

Abu Waaqid al-Laythi is weak according to the Jumhoor.
