Abu al-Muhazzim al-Tameemi al-Basri




Name:

أبو المهزم التميمى البصرى ، اسمه يزيد بن سفيان ، و قيل عبد الرحمن بن سفيان

Abu al-Muhazzim al-Tameemi al-Basri, his name is Yazeed bin Sufyaan, and it is said: Abdur Rahmaan bin Sufyaan

Tabaqah: 3 - From the Middle Level of Taabi'een

Death: 111-120 H

Narrated by: Abu Dawood – Tirmidhi – Ibn Maajah

Teachers: Abu Hurayrah, Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari, Mu’aawiyah bin Abi Sufyaan (radiallah anhum) and Muhammad bin Ka’b al-Madani

Students: Habeeb al-Mu’allam, Harb bin Shurayh, Husayn al-Mu’allam, Hammaad bin Salamah, Shu’bah bin al-Hajjaaj, Ghaalib al-Qattaan, and others.

Status: Matrook, Accused of Fabricating

Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

Those who criticized him:

1-    Imaam Shu’bah bin al-Hajjaaj weakened him and abandoned him
[See, Sunan at-Tirmidhi (1281), Ad-Du’afa al-Kabeer by al-Bukhaari (404), Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel (9/269) and others]

Imaam Shu’bah also said: “I saw Abu al-Muhazzim in the mosque of Thaabit al-Bunaani forsaken (by others); had a person given him money, he would have narrated to him seventy (i.e. many) narrations (i.e. by fabricating)”

Another narration includes the wording: “Had a person given him Dirham, he would have fabricated narrations”

2-    Imaam Amr bin Ali al-Fallaas (D. 249) said: “I never heard Yahya (al-Qattaan) and Abdur Rahmaan (bin Mahdi) narrating anything from Abu al-Muhazzim”

3-    Imaam Ali bin Abdullah al-Madeeni (D. 234) said: “He is Da’eef”

4-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said: “His hadeeth is not close”

5-    Imaam Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) said: “He is Da’eef” and in another instance he said: “He is nothing”

And in the narration of Mu’aawiyah bin Saalih, Imaam Ibn Ma’een said: “His hadeeth is nothing”

6-    Imaam Abu Zur’ah ar-Raazi (D. 264) said: “He is not strong, Shu’bah has weakened him saying: I wrote hundred narrations from him but I did not narrate anything from him, this was mentioned by Ali bin al-Madeeni from Abdur Rahmaan”

7-    Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi (D. 275) said: “He is Da’eef ul-Hadeeth”

8-    Imaam Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel al-Bukhaari (D. 256) mentioned him in his book of weak narrators and said: “Shu’bah has abandoned him”
[ See, Al-Taareekh al-Kabeer by al-Bukhaari (8/339 T. 3235); and Du’afa as-Sagheer by al-Bukhaari (404)]

9-    Imaam Al-Nasaa’ee (D. 303) said: “He is Matrook ul-Hadeeth”

10-          Imaam Abu Ja’far al-Ukaylee (D. 322) mentioned him in his ad-Du’afa and said: “His hadeeth is not followed”
[ Ad-Du'afa al-Kabeer by al-Ukaylee (4/383 T. 1996)]

11-          Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) mentioned him in al-Majroheen and said: “He is among those who would get confused and err in what he narrated, so when he excelled in opposing the narrations of established narrators, he went out of the boundary of Adaalah, and Shu’bah did indeed abandon him”

12-          Imaam Abu Ahmed bin Adee al-Jarjaani (D. 365) said: “And normally what he narrates is not preserved”
[ Al-Kaamil by Ibn Adee (9/150)]

13-          Imaam Abu al-Hasan ad-Daaraqutni (D. 385) mentioned him in his book of weak narrators and said: “Shu’bah has weakened him”
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by ad-Daaraqutni (591)]

In the narration of al-Barqaani, Imaam ad-Daaraqutni said: “He is abandoned”

14-          Imaam Abu Abdullah al-Haakim al-Neesaaboori (D. 405) said: “He narrates Munkar narrations from Abu Hurayrah”

15-          Haafidh Abu Nu’aym al-Asbahaani (D. 430) mentioned him in his ad-Du’afa and said: “He narrated Munkar narrations from Abu Hurayrah”

16-          Haafidh Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi (D. 456) said: “Abu al-Muhazzim is severely weak”
[ Al-Muhalla bil Athaar by Ibn Hazm (7/496)]

17-          Imaam Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi (D. 458) said: “He is Da’eef”
[ Sunan al-Kubra lil Bayhaqi (5/338 H. 10016)]

And in Shu’b al-Eemaan, Al-Bayhaqi said: “And Abu al-Muhazzim is Matrook”
[ Shu'b al-Eemaan by Bayhaqi (1/311 H. 150)]

18-          Haafidh Ibn al-Jawzee (D. 597) declared a hadeeth to be Mawdoo (Fabricated) due to the presence of Abu al-Muhazzim in it and said: “He Muttaham”
[ Al-Ilal al-Mutanaahiyah by Ibn al-Jawzee (1/380)]

At another place, he said: “Abu al-Muhazzim is nothing”
[1/150]

19-          Haafidh Sharf ud-Deen al-Nawawi (D. 676) weakened his hadeeth saying: “And it is Da’eef because of the weakness of Abu al-Muhazzim”

At another place, Imaam Nawawi said: “He is Da’eef with the agreement of all Muhadditheen”
[Al-Majmoo Sharh al-Muhadhdhab by al-Nawawi (7/318, 7332)]

20-          Imaam Shams ud-Deen adh-Dhahabi (D. 748) said: “They have weakened him”
[ Meezaan al-I'tidaal by Dhahabi (4/426)]

At another place, Imaam Dhahabi said: “He is Matrook”
[Tanqeeh al-Tahqeeq by al-Dhahabi (2/10)]

21-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said: “He is Matrook”
[ Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb by Ibn Hajar (8397)]

22-          Haafidh Noor ud-Deen al-Haythami (D. 807) said: “He is Matrook”
[ Majma az-Zawaaid by Al-Haythami (1/82)]

At another place, he said: “He is weakened by Jumhoor”
[10/287]

Those who praised him:

None!!


Conclusion:

Abu al-Muhazzim is severely weak, Matrook, and Accused of Fabricating according to the consensus of all Muhadditheen.
