Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

Those who criticized him:

1-    Imaam al-Jarh wat Ta'deel Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) said: “Abu Zilaal – whose name is Hilaal, is nothing”
[ Ad-Du'afa al-Kabeer by al-Ukaylee (4/345), Chain Saheeh]

In the narration of Abbaas bin Muhammad ad-Dauri, Imaam Yahya ibn Ma’een said: “Hilaal al-Qasmali is Da’eef, he is nothing”
[ Taareekh Ibn Ma'een, narrated by ad-Dauri (2/624)]

2-    Imaam Ya’qoob bin Sufyaan al-Fasawi (D. 277) said: “Abu Zilaal al-Qasmali is Layyin ul-Hadeeth”
[ Al-Ma'rifah wal Taareekh by Ya'qoob bin Sufyaan (2/661)]

3-    Imaam Al-Nasaa’ee (D. 303) said: “Da’eef”
[ Ad-Du'afa wal Matrokeen by al-Nasaa'ee (T. 606, 660)]

Al-Nasaa’ee also said in his Kitaab al-Kunaa that: “He is nothing”
[ With reference from Tahdheeb at-Tahdheeb by Ibn Hajar (11/85)]

4-    Imaam Ibn al-Jaarood (D. 307) mentioned him in his Kitaab ad-Du’afa and: “He is Da’eef”

[ Al-Majroheen by Ibn Hibbaan (3/85)]

Note: Haafidh al-Mizzi etc has said that Ibn Hibbaan mentioned him in his Ath-Thiqaat which is incorrect. Ibn Hibbaan has only mentioned a person named Hilaal bin Abi Hilaal and he did not mention his Kunya. Whereas, Ibn Hibbaan mentioning al-Qasmali in al-Majroheen strengthens the opinion that he was not talking about this Abu Zilaal al-Qasmali

[ Al-Kaashif by Dhahabi (2/342)]

Note: Even Ibn Hibbaan has weakened him in al-Majroheen.

[ Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb by Ibn Hajar (7349)]
