[Siyar A’laam al-Nabula: 10/163]

3-    Imaam Abu al-Hasan al-Ijlee (D. 261) said:

ثقة وكان صاحب سنة
“Thiqah, and he was a man of Sunnah”
[ Ath-Thiqaat by al-Ijlee (1/62 T. 76)]

4-    Imaam Abu Bakr al-Bazzaar (D. 313) said:

هُو ثِقَةٌ
“He is Thiqah”
[ Musnad al-Bazzaar (10/55 H. 4119)]

5-    Imaam Abu Sa’eed bin Yoonus al-Misri (D. 347) said:

“Thiqah”
[ Taareekh Misr by Ibn Yoonus al-Misri with reference from Ikmaal Tahdheeb al-Kamaal (2/126)]

6-    Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) mentioned him in Kitaab ath-Thiqaat (8/136 T. 12616) and he also narrated from him in his Saheeh.

7-    Imaam Ibn Khuzaymah (D. 311) narrated from him in his Saheeh.

8-    Imaam Abu Abdullah al-Haakim al-Neesaaboori (D. 405) authenticated the chains of several of his narrations in al-Mustadrak Ala as-Saheehayn.

9-    Imaam Shams ud-Deen adh-Dhahabi (D. 748) said:

هُوَ الإِمَامُ، الحَافِظُ، الثِّقَةُ، ذُو التَّصَانِيْفِ
“He is al-Imaam, al-Haafidh, ath-Thiqah, possessor of books”
[ Siyar A’laam al-Nabula (10/162)]

In Meezaan al-I’tidaal (1/207), Imaam Dhahabi said:

وقد استشهد به البخاري، واحتج به النسائي وأبو داود، وما علمت به بأسا إلا أن ابن حزم ذكره في كتاب الصيد فقال: منكر الحديث
“Indeed Al-Bukhaari has taken support from him (in his Saheeh), and Nasaa’ee and Abu Dawood have taken hujjah from him, and I do not know anything wrong in him except that Ibn Hazm has mentioned him in Kitaab as-Sayd and said: Munkar ul-Hadeeth”

Imaam Dhahabi also mentioned him in “Man Tukullima Feehi Wahuwa Muwththaq” (1/43)

“Asad bin Moosa al-Umawi famously known as Asad us-Sunnah, they have declared him Thiqah”

Those who criticized him:

1-    Haafidh Abdul Haqq al-Ashbaylee (D. 581) said:

لا يحتج به عندهم
“Evidence is not taken from him according to them”
[ Al-Ahkaam al-Wusta with reference from Ikmaal Tahdheeb al-Kamaal (2/126)]

2-    Imaam Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi (D. 456) said in Kitaab as-Sayd:

هو منكر الحديث ضعيف
“He is Munkar ul-Hadeeth, Da’eef”

Imaam Dhahabi replied Ibn Hazm’s Jarh saying:

“And this weakening is rejected”
[Meezaan al-I’tidaal: 1/207]

A Muta’assib Hanafi and a chief innovator of his time, Zaahid al-Kawthaari merely rejected Asad bin Moosa based on the weakening of Imaam Ibn Hazm. Just because this narrator was present in a narration which did not favor the Hanafi views, Zaahid al-Kawthaari went ahead and declared him Da’eef based only on one testimony and ignored all the other obvious authentications!!
Such is the sincerity of these people towards the Deen of Allaah! We seek Allaah’s refuge from this deceptive behavior!

Conclusion:

Asad bin Moosa is Thiqah.
