Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:
Those who praised him:
1-
Ameer ul-Mu'mineen fil Hadeeth, Imaam
Shu’bah bin al-Hajjaaj (D. 160) has narrated from Ibraaheem bin Sa’d
az-Zuhri, and Imaam Shu’bah is among those who do not narrate except from the
one who is Thiqah according to him.
Imaam Dhahabi
said: “The
teachers of Shu’bah are Jayyaad”
[Meezaan:
4504]
While
discussing a narrator, Haafidh Ibn Hajar said: “the narration of Shu’bah from
him is his Tawtheeq”
[Tahdheeb
at-Tahdheeb: 5161]”
2-
Imaam
Abdur Rahmaan bin Mahdi (D. 198) narrated from him and he also does
not narrate except from the Thiqah according to him.
Imaam Ahmed
bin Hanbal (the student of Ibn Mahdi) said while talking about a narrator:
“أبان بن خالد شيخ بصري لا بأس به كان عبد الرحمن
يحدث عنه، وكان لا يحدث إلا عن ثقة”
“Abaan bin Khaalid Shaykh Basri, there is nothing wrong in
him, Abdur Rahmaan used to narrate from him, and he did not narrate except from
the Thiqah (according to him)”
[Su’alaat Abu Dawood lil Imaam Ahmed (P. 338-339)]
3-
Imaam
Muhammad bin Sa’d Kaatib al-Waaqidi (D. 230) said:
“كَانَ
ثِقَةً كَثِيرَ الْحَدِيثِ، وَرُبَّمَا أَخْطَأَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ”
“He was Thiqah Katheer ul-Hadeeth, and he sometimes make mistake
in hadeeth”
[
Tabaqaat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa'd (7/322)]
4-
Imaam
Yahya bin Ma’een (D. 233) said:
“ثقةٌ حجةٌ”
“Thiqah Hujjah”
[
Al-Kaamil by Ibn Adee (1/401), Chain Hasan]
At another place,
he said:
“ليس به
بَأسٌ في الزُّهري”
“There is nothing wrong in his
narration from Zuhri”
[Taareekh Ibn Ma’een by Ad-Dauri (945)]
For more
sayings of Imaam Ibn Ma’een on this narrator, see Mawsoo’ah Aqwaal Yahya bin Ma’een
(1/148-149).
5-
Imaam
Ahmed bin Hanbal (D. 241) said:
“ثقة”
“Thiqah”
[
Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel (2/283), Chain Saheeh]
At another
place, he said:
“أحاديثه
“His narrations are Mustaqeem”
[
Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel (2/283), Chain Saheeh]
Imaam Abu
Dawood narrates:
“سمعت أحمد
قال: كان وكيع كف عن حديث إبراهيم بن سعد ثم حدث عنه بعد قلت: لم؟ قال: لا أدري،
إبراهيم ثقه. سمعت أحمد قال: إبراهيم بن سعد صحيح الحديث عن ابن إسحاق”
“I heard Ahmed saying: Wakee’ used to abstain from the hadeeth
of Ibraaheem bin Sa’d (but) later he started narrating from him. I asked, why?
He replied: I don’t know; Ibraaheem is Thiqah. I heard Ahmed saying: Ibraaheem
bin Sa’d is Saheeh ul-Hadeeth in narrating from Ibn Ishaaq”
[
Su'aalaat Abi Dawood lil Imaam Ahmed (202)]
6-
Imaam
Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel al-Bukhaari (D. 256) narrated from him in his
Saheeh.

Saheeh.
8-
Imaam
Abu al-Hasan al-Ijlee (D. 261) said:
“ثقة”
“Thiqah”
[
Ath-Thiqaat by al-Ijlee (1/52)]
9-
Imaam
Abu Haatim ar-Raazi (D. 275) said:
“ثقة”
“Thiqah”
[
Al-Jarh wat Ta'deel by Ibn Abi Haatim (2/102)]
10-
Imaam
Ibn Khuzaymah (D. 311) narrated from him in his Saheeh.
11-
Imaam
Ibn Hibbaan (D. 354) mentioned him in his book of Thiqaat (1/2) and he
also narrated from him in his Saheeh
12-
Imaam
Abu Abdullah al-Haakim al-Neesaaboori (D. 405) authenticated several
of his narrations in al-Mustadrak Ala as-Saheehayn.
13-
Imaam
Abu Ahmed bin Adee al-Jarjaani (D. 365) said:
“ولإبراهيم بن سعد أحاديث صالحة مستقيمة، عن الزهري وعن غيره، ولم
يتخلف أحد عن الكتابة عنه بالكوفة والبصرة وبغداد، وهو من ثقات المسلمين”
“And Ibraaheem bin Sa’d has Saalih Mustaqeem narrations from
Zuhri and from others. No one has disputed on writing from him in Koofah,
Basrah, and Baghdaad, and he is among the Thiqah Muslims”
[
Al-Kaamil by Ibn Adee (1/404)]
14-
Imaam
Shams ud-Deen adh-Dhahabi (D. 748) said:
“إبراهيم بن سعد ثقة”
“Ibraaheem bin Sa’d is Thiqah”
[
Meezaan al-I’tidaal (1/33-34)]
At another
place, he said:
“وَكَانَ
ثِقَةً صَدُوقاً، صَاحِبَ حَدِيْثٍ”
“He was Thiqah Sadooq, a man
of Hadeeth”
[Siyar A’laam al-Nabula (8/305)]
At another
place, he said:
“وَكَانَ
مِنَ الْعُلَمَاءِ الثِّقَاتِ”
“And he was among the Thiqah
Scholars”
[Taareekh al-Islaam (4/796)]
And that is
why, he also mentioned him in his small book named “Man Takallam Feehi
Wahuwa Mawthaq” (1/31) and mentioned that although he is Thiqah but he is
not that precise in narrating from Zuhri as other of his Kibaar Students.
15-
Haafidh
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani (D. 852) said:
“ثقة حجة تكلم فيه بلا قادح”
“He is Thiqah Hujjah; he is criticized without any harm”
[
Taqreeb (177)]
Those who criticized him:
1- Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal said, we mentioned a hadeeth of Uqayl to
(
Imaam)
Yahya bin Sa’eed al-Qattaan (D. 198) so he said to me:
“يا أبا عبد الله، عقيل وإبراهيم بن سعد!! عقيل وإبراهيم بن سعد!!
كأنه يضعفهما”
“O Abu Abdullah, Uqayl and Ibraaheem bin Sa’d!! Uqayl and
Ibraaheem bin Sa’d!! as if he weakened them”
[
Al-Ilal wa Ma'rifat ur-Rijaal by Ahmed, narrated by Abdullah (282, 2475, 3422)]
However, this
saying does not denote his Tad’eef! Moreover, it is known that Imaam Yahya
al-Qattaan was among the Muta’annit Naaqideen, which is why Imaam Dhahabi says
in Meezaan al-I’tidaal:
“يحيى بن سعيد القطان متعنِّتٌ جداً في الرجال”
“Yahya bin Sa’eed al-Qattaan was severely Muta’annit
towards the Rijaal”
[3/247]
Therefore,
even if it is a Jarh, his Jarh is not acceptable without an explanation.
2-
Imaam
Abu Ja’far al-Ukaylee (D. 322) mentioned him in his book of Du’afa (1/60).
Imaam Al-Ukaylee
is also among the Mutashaddideen and therefore his Jarh is not accepted as well
without an explanation. Dhahabi ul-Asr, Allaamah Abdur Rahmaan bin Yahya al-Mu’allami
al-Yamaani said:
“قد كان في العقيلي تشدد”
“Indeed Ukaylee had Tashaddud in him”
[Al-Tankeel (2/700)]
Conclusion:
Ibraaheem bin Sa’d is Thiqah
Hujjah.
