Ismaa'eel bin Khaleefah, Abu Israa'eel bin Abi Ishaaq al-Mulaa'ee

Name:

إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ الْعَبْسِيُّ، أَبُو إِسْرَائِيلَ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُلائِيُّ الْكُوفِيُّ وَقِيلَ: اسْمُهُ عَبْد الْعَزِيزِ مَوْلَى سَعْدُ بْنُ حُذَيْفَةَ

Ismaa’eel bin Khaleefah al-Absi, Abu Israa’eel bin Abi Ishaaq al-Mulaa’ee al-Koofi and it is said: His name (i.e. of Abu Ishaaq) is Abdul Azeez; the client of Sa’d bin Hudhayfah

Those who criticized him:

1-    Muhammad bin al-Muthanna said: “I never heard Abdur Rahmaan (bin Mahdi) narrating anything from him”

Imaam Amr bin Ali al-Fallaas said, I asked (Imaam) Abdur Rahmaan bin Mahdi about the hadeeth of Abu Israa’eel al-Mulaa’ee, so he refused to narrate to me anything from him, and he said: “He used to insult Uthmaan bin Affaan radiallah anhu”

2-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal said: “He opposes in ahaadeeth”

He also said: “He narrated a Munkar hadeeth in al-Qateel”

Imaam Ahmed narrated from Affaan that he said, I heard Abu Israa’eel (Ismaa’eel bin Khaleefah) saying, “I bear witness that Uthmaan is a disbeliever (Kaafir) of Allaah the great” Na’uzubillah

3-    Imaam al-Bukhaari mentioned him in ad-Du’afa and said: “Abu al-Waleed has weakened him”

Al-Bukhaari also said: “Ibn Mahdi has abandoned him"

4-    Imaam at-Tirmidhi said: “He is not strong according to the people of hadeeth”
[Sunan at-Tirmidhi: H. 198]

5-    Imaam Nasaa’ee said: “He is not Thiqah”
[Ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen by al-Nasaa’ee: 285]

6-    Imaam al-Bazzaar said: “Abu Israa’eel is Layyin ul-Hadeeth”
[Musnad al-Bazzaar: 10/145]

He also said: “Abu Israa’eel is not strong”
[Kashf ul-Astaar: 2/209 H. 1534]

7-    Imaam Abu Ja’far al-Ukaylee mentioned him in ad-Du’afa said: “There is Wahem and Idtiraab in his hadeeth, and besides that, he has an ill Madhab”

8-    Imaam Abu Ahmed bin Adee al-Jarjaani said: He opposes the Thiqah narrators in whatever he normally narrates, and he is overall among those whose narrations are written down (for Mutaabi’aat)”

9-    Ibraaheem bin Ya’qoob al-Juzjaani said: “Slanderer Aberrant”
[Ahwaal ur-Rijaal by al-Juzjaani: P. 19]

10-          Imaam Ibn Hibbaan mentioned him in al-Majroheen and said: “He was a Raafidi, he used to insult the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him), Ibn Mahdi has abandoned him, and Abu al-Waleed criticized him severely, and with that, he is Munkar ul-Hadeeth”

11-          Imaam ad-Daaraqutni mentioned him in ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen
[74]

Imaam ad-Daaraqutni also said: “He is Da’eef”

12-          Imaam Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Mandah al-Abdi al-Asbahaani said: “He is Matrook ul-Hadeeth, and he used to curse Uthmaan”

13-          Haafidh Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi said: “He is Da’eef”
[Ma’rifat us-Sunan wal Athaar by al-Bayhaqi: 12/19 # 15690]

He also said after narrating a hadeeth that: “Abu Israa’eel is alone in narrating it from Atiyyah al-Awfi, and evidence is not taken from the narration of both of these two”

14-          Imaam Ibn Hazm said: “He is severely weak”
[Al-Muhalla: 11/317]

15-          Haafidh Ibn al-Jawzee said: “He is Da’eef”

16-          Imaam Dhahabi said: “Du’f”
[Al-Kaashif: 1/245 T. 370]

Imaam Dhahabi also said: “They have weakened him, and he used to do the Takfeer of Uthmaan radiallah anhu”

At another place, he said: “He is Waah (wasted)”
[Al-Muqtani: 1/75]

At another place, he said: “He is one of the Du’afa (weak narrators)”
[Meezaan al-I’tidaal: 1/222]

17-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalaani said: “Sadooq, Sa’ee ul-Hifdh, attributed towards Ghulu in Tashee’”
[Taqreeb: 440]

At another place, Haafidh Ibn Hajar said: “He is Da’eef”
[Al-Talkhees al-Habeer: 1/652]

18-          Haafidh Noor ud-Deen al-Haythami said: “He is Da’eef”
[Majma az-Zawaaid: 8/95]

19-          Haafidh al-Busayri graded one of his ahaadeeth, saying: “Its chain is weak because of the weakness of Ismaa’eel bin Khaleefah Abu Israa’eel”
[Misbaah uz-Zajaajah: 1/29]

20-          Badr ud-Deen Aynee al-Hanafi said: “Feehi Layyin”
[Umdat ul-Qaari: 9/128]

Those who praised him:

1-    Imaam Yahya ibn Ma’een said: “He is Saalih al-Hadeeth”
[Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel: 1/166, Chain Saheeh]

He also said: “He is Thiqah”
[Taareekh Ibn Ma’een, narrated by Ad-Dauri: 2/33]

Imaam Ibn Ma’een also said: “There is nothing wrong in him”
[Su’aalaat Ibn al-Junayd: 1/474]

Note: The Jarh of Imaam Ibn Ma’een is narrated by Imaam Ibn Adee with a weak chain from Ibn Hammaad ad-Dolaabi. And Ad-Dolaabi is weak.

2-    Imaam Amr bin Ali al-Fallaas said: “He is not from the people of lie”

Note: This is not a Tawtheeq.

3-    Imaam Abu Zur’ah ar-Raazi said: “He is Sadooq except that there is Ghulu in his opinion”

4-    Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi said: “He is Hasan ul-Hadeeth, Jayyid ul-Liqaa, and he has errors, evidence is not taken from his hadeeth, and write his narrations; he is Sa’ee ul-Hifdh”

5-    Imaam Ya’qoob bin Sufyaan said: “He is Thiqah”
[Al-Ma’rifah wal Taareekh: 3/133, 3/241]

6-    Imaam Ibn Sa’d said: “They say he is Sadooq”
[Tabaqaat Ibn Sa’d: 6/356]

Note: This is not a tawtheeq also.

Abu Israa’eel and Tadlees

1-    Haafidh Ibn Hajar mentioned him in the fifth level of Mudalliseen and said: “They have weakened him, and At-Tirmidhi has pointed out that he used to commit tadlees”

2-    Haafidh al-‘Alaa’ee mentioned him in al-Mudalliseen
[P. 112]
3-    Similarly, Abu Zur’ah Ibn al-Iraaqi [77]
4-    Al-Halabi [P. 63]
5-    And Al-Dameeni [2/78]
have also mentioned him among the Mudallis narrators

Conclusion:

Abu Israa'eel al-Mulaa'ee is Da'eef with regard to Dhabt because of his weak memory,  and Da'eef also with regard to Adaalah because of his Rafadh and insult to the Noble Companions of Allaah's Messenger (peace be upon him).
