Hakam bin Abdullah Abu Mutee Al-Balkhee




Full Name:
الحكم بْن عَبْد اللَّهِ بْن مسلمة بْن عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ أَبُو مطيع البلخي الخراساني

Hakam bin Abdullah bin Maslamah bin Abdur Rahmaan, Abu Mutee’ Al-Balkhee Al-Khuraasaani

Note: He is the narrator of Fiqh ul-Akbar attributed to Imaam Abu Haneefah

Tabaqah: 8 - From the Middle Level of Taba Taabi'een

Teachers: Hishaam bin Hisaan, Bakr bin Khunays, Ibaad bin Katheer, Abdullah bin Awn, Ibraheem bin Tahmaan, Israa’eel bin Yoonus, Nu’maan bin Thaabit Abu Haneefah, Maalik bin Anas, and Sufyaan ath-Thawree.

Students: Ahmed bin Munee’, and a group of people from Khurasaan.

Profession: Qaadhi of Balkh.

Status: Matrook ul-Hadeeth, Kadhaab, Leader of Murji'ah

Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

1-    Imaam Dhahabi wrote regarding him that: “He was an expert in Raye, he was a Major Allaamah and the holder of high status, but was useless in the preservation of Athaar.”

Imaam Dhahabi also said: “He is abandoned”
[Al-Mughni fi ad-Du’afa: 1/183]

2-    Imaam Ibn Sa’d said: “He was a Murji’i, He is Da’eef according to them in Hadeeth, and he was blind”

3-    Imaam ad-Daaraqutni mentioned him in ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen.

4-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal declared him a Jahmi and said: Do not narrate anything from him”

5-    Imaam Yahya Ibn Ma’een said: “He is Da’eef.”

6-    He also said: “He is Nothing”

7-    Imaam Abu Hafs Amr bin Ali Al-Fallaas said: “Abu Mutee’ Al-Hakam bin Abdullah is Da’eef in Hadeeth”

8-    Imaam Nasaa’ee said: “He is Da’eef.”

9-    Abdur Rahmaan bin Abi Haatim said: I asked my Father about Abu Mutee’ Al-Balkhee, so he said: “He is the Qaadhi of Balkh, he is a Murji’i, Da’eef ul-Hadeeth”

10-          Imaam Ibn Hibbaan mentioned him in Kitaab al-Majroheen and said: “He was from the Leaders of Murji’ah, and is one of those who held hatred for the Sunnah and those who act upon Sunnah”

11-          Imaam Ibn Adee said: “The weakness in his narrations is evident, and whatever he narrates usually is not followed.”

12-          Imaam Daaraqutni weakened him by mentioning him in Kitaab ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen [2/148]

13-          Imaam Khateeb Baghdaadi said: “He is Da’eef”
[Al-Muttafaq wal Muftaraq: 2/779]

14-          Imaam Ibn Al-Jawzee mentioned him in Kitaab ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen [1/227]

15-          Haafidh Noor ud-Deen al-Haythami said: “Abu Mutee’ is Matrook (abandoned)”

16-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar said in Lisaan al-Mizaan that: “Dhahabi has said with certainty that he has fabricated narrations”
[Lisaan al-Mizaan: 2/336]

The common Muhadditheen have abandoned him, and some people have even issued the fatwa of Kufr upon him. In fact, he even fabricated this hadeeth to give strength to the Madhab of Jahmiyyah and Murji’ah that: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘Having the Aqeedah that Eemaan increases and decreases, is Kufr and Shirk’”

17-          Imaam Bayhaqi weakened him in Al-Sunan al-Kubra. [2/315]

18-          Imaam Ukaylee mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa al-Kabeer. [1/256]

19-          Ibn al-Qaysaraani weakened Abu Mutee’ in Dhakheerat ul-Huffaadh

20-          Abu Abdullah al-Hamdaani al-Jurqaani said, while commenting on a hadeeth, that: “This hadeeth is Mawdoo’ Baatil, there is no basis for it, It is from the Fabrications of Abu Mutee’….. He is from the leaders of Murji’ah; he is from the fabricators of hadeeth, and from those who hold hatred for the Sunan.”

21-          Suyooti graded a hadeeth to be fabricated because of Abu Mutee’.

22-          Noor ud-Deen al-Kinaani declared Abu Mutee’ to be a Liar and Fabricator of hadeeth.

23-          Even the Imaam of Hanafiyyah, Anwar Shaah Kashmiri has confessed that he is not reliable in Hadeeth. [Faydh ul-Baari: 1/59]

Conclusion:

Al-Hakam bin Abdullah Abu Mutee al-Balkhi is a Weak, Kadh-dhaab, and Matrook narrator.

  1. I've been searching to know the real writer of 'fiqh al Akbar' which is attributed to Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have Marcy on him). Please give me a link about it.
