Al-Haarith bin Abdullah al-A’war al-Hamdaani al-Hawti al-Khaarfi, Abu Zuhayr al-Koofi

Teachers: Zayd bin Thaabit, Abdullah bin Mas’ood, Ali bin Abi Taalib, and Buqayrah the wife of Salmaan al-Faarsi

Students: Aamir ash-Sha’bee, Ataa bin Abi Ribaah, Abu Ishaaq al-Hamdaani, and others.

Status: Severely Weak, Kadh-dhaab (Liar)

The Testimony of Jumhoor:

1-    Haafidh Dhahabi said: “The Jumhoor declare his matter to be weak”

2-    Haafidh Sakhaawi said: “The Jumhoor has weakened Al-A’war; and his tawtheeq has been narrated from Ahmed bin Saalih”

3-    Haafidh Haythami said: “The Jumhoor has declared him weak, and he has also been authenticated”

4-    Haafidh Ibn al-Mulaqqin said: “The Jumhoor has declared him weak, and some have authenticated him”

5-    Ibn Hajar al-Makki al-Haytami said: “The Jumhoor has declared him weak”

6-    Haafidh Nawawi said: “There is a unanimous agreement on the weakness of Al-Haarith Al-A’war, and the abandonment from taking evidence from him”

Those who criticized him:

1-    Imaam Sha’bee said: “Al-Haarith narrated to me, and I bear witness that he is one of the Liars”

2-    Imaam Ibraaheem an-Nakha’ee said: “Certainly Haarith is accused of lying”

3-    Imaam Ayyoob as-Sakhtiyaani said: “(Imaam) Ibn Sireen thought the common narrations that many people (including Haarith al-A’war) narrate from Ali (radiallah anhu) is Baatil”

4-    Imaam Ali ibn al-Madeeni said: “Al-Haarith is a Liar”
[Al-Kaamil by Ibn Adee: 2/158, Chain Saheeh]

5-    Imaam Abu Bakr bin Ayyaash said: “Al-Haarith was not more pleasing than the other narrators, others were more pleasing than him. People used to say that he is the possessor of many books”

6-    Imaam Yahya bin Sa’eed al-Qattaan said: “Sufyaan said, we know the preference of the hadeeth of Aasim over the hadeeth of Haarith”

7-    Imaam Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb said: “Al-Haarith al-A’war was a Liar”

8-    Imaam Jareer bin Abdul Humayd ar-Raazi said: “Haarith al-A’war is a fraudulent”

9-    Hamzah bin Habeeb az-Ziyaat said: “Murrah bin Sharaaheel al-Hamdaani heard some things from Haarith al-A’war, thus he rejected them. He said to him: Sit here until I came back, thus Murrah al-Hamdaani entered and prepared his sword, when Haarith saw that the matter has grown worse, he ran away”

10-          Imaam Amr bin Ali al-Fallaas said:
11-          “Yahya and Abdur Rahmaan would not narrate from Abu Ishaaq the hadeeth of Haarith narrated from Ali”

12-          Imaam Bandaar said: “Yahya and Abdur Rahmaan took the pen from me and crossed out about 40 narrations of Haarith al-A’war from Ali”

13-          Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi said: “He is Da’eef in hadeeth, he is not strong, and neither from those whose hadeeth is taken as evidence.”

14-          Imaam Abu Zur’ah ar-Raazi said: “Evidence is not taken from him”

15-          Imaam Ibn Adee said: “And normally what he narrated from Ali and Ibn Mas’ood is not preserved.”

16-          Imaam Nasaa’ee said: “He is nothing in hadeeth”
[Khasaais Ala lil Nasaa’ee: H. 30]

He also said: “He is not strong”
[Ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen: 114]

Note: The saying “There is nothing wrong in him” by Imaam Nasaa’ee concerning Haarith is not proven from him.

17-          Imaam Ibn Abi Haatim said: “Ash-Sha’bee has accused him of Lying”

18-          Imaam Ibn Hibbaan said: “He’s exaggerated in Tashee’, he is wasted in hadeeth”
[Al-Majroheen: 1/222]

19-          Imaam Ibn Sa’d said: “He had a weak saying (i.e. Madhab), and he was weak in hadeeth”
[Tabaqaat al-Kubra: 6/116]

20-          Imaam Tirmidhi said: “Some people of knowledge have weakened Haarith al-A’war”

21-          Imaam ad-Daaraqutni said: “When he is alone in narrating, his hadeeth is not established”

He also mentioned him Kitaab ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen [153]

22-          Imaam Uthmaan bin Sa’eed ad-Daarimi said: “His hadeeth is not followed”

23-          Imaam Ibn Mundhir said about a narration: “The hadeeth of Haarith is not proven, Sha’bee has declared him a Liar”

24-          Imaam Bayhaqi said: “He is Da’eef”

He also said: “Evidence is not taken from the likes of him”
[Al-Sunan al-Kubra: 2/143]

He also said: “Evidence is not taken from the hadeeth of Haarith due to the criticism of Huffaadh on him”
[Al-Sunan al-Kubra: 6/267]

25-          Haafidh Ibn Hazm said: “And al-Haarith is a Liar (Kadh-dhaab)”

26-          Ibn al-Ammaad said: “He is accused of lying”
[Shadhraat adh-Dhahab by Ibn al-Ammaad: 1/73]

27-          Imaam Ibn Abdil Barr said: “He is Da’eef”
[Al-Tamheed by Ibn Abdil Barr: 13/440]

28-          Imaam Ibn al-Qattaan al-Faasi said: “Al-Haarith is accused of lying”

29-          Haafidh Ibn al-Jawzee said: “It has passed several times in our book that he is a Kadh-dhaab (Liar)”

Have declared him Kadh-dhaab (Liar)

33-          Haafidh Nawawi said: “And they have agreed upon that Haarith is Kadh-dhaab (Liar)”

34-           Haafidh Iraaqi said has declared him “Da’eef”
[Takhreej Ahaadeeth al-Ahyaa: 2/377]

35-          Ibn Turkamaani al-Hanafi said: “A group has declared him Kadh-dhaab (liar)”
[Al-Johar al-Naqi: 4/166]

He also said: “He is Da’eef”
[Al-Johar al-Naqi: 4/286]

36-          Haafidh Zayla’ee al-Hanafi said: “Evidence is not taken from him”
[Nasb ur-Rayaa: 2/426]

He also said: “He is severely weak”
[Takhreej al-Kashaaf: 1/42]

37-          Allaamah Aynee al-Hanafi said: “This hadeeth is Da’eef, in fact close to being Baatil, for verily although Abu Ishaaq has heard this hadeeth from Haarith, but the condition of Haarith is known”

38-          Haafidh Haythami [Majma az-Zawaaid: 1/187]
39-          And Haafidh Ibn Hajar [al-Nakat: 1/340] have declared him “Severely weak”

40-          Allaamah Sindhi al-Hanafi said that he is a “Da’eef” narrator
[Haashiah as-Sindhi Ala Ibn Maajah: 92, 369, 955]

Those who praised him:

1-    Imaam Yahya ibn Ma’een said: “He is Thiqah”
[Taareekh ad-Daarimi: 233]

This tawtheeq is not acceptable because of being against the Jumhoor.
Moreover, Imaam Ibn Ma’een has also declared Haarith al-A’war to be Weak.

This saying is in accordance to the Jumhoor; therefore, it is given preference. Otherwise, both sayings will be considered Saaqit.

2-    Imaam Ahmed bin Saalih al-Misri said: “He is Thiqah, how preserved and better his narrations are from Ali! And he praised him”
[Al-Thiqaat by Ibn Shaaheen: 282]

This saying was not found with a chain therefore, it is not acceptable. Imaam Ahmed bin Saalih al-Misri died in 248 H. Whereas, Imaam Ibn Shaaheen was born in 297 H.

We come to know that al-Haarith bin Abdullah al-A’war is a Da’eef and Kadh-dhaab narrator with the agreement of all Scholars.
