سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبد الرَّحمَن بْنِ عَبد اللهِ بْنِ جَمِيلٍ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، الجُمَحيّ، القُرَشِيّ، أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ المَدَنِيّ، قَاضِي بَغداد.

Sa’eed bin Abdur Rahmaan bin Abdullah bin Jameel bin Aamir, al-Jumahi, al-Qurashi, Abu Abdillah al-Madani – The Judge of Baghdaad.

Birth: 104 H

Tabaqah: 8 – From the Middle Level of Taba Taabi’een

Death: 176 H

Narrated by: Al-Bukhaari in Khalq Af’aal al-Ibaad – Muslim – Abu Dawood – Nasaa’ee – Ibn Maajah

Teachers: Salamah bin Deenaar al-Madani, Suhayl bin Abi Saalih, Muhammad bin Qays al-Madani, Ubaydullah bin Umar, Hishaam bin Urwah, Yoonus bin Yazeed al-Aylee and others.

Students: Ahmed bin Ibraaheem al-Mawsali, Abu Tawbah ar-Rabee’ bin Naafi, Abdullah bin Wahb, Ali bin Hujr al-Marwazi, Layth bin Sa’d, Muhammad bin as-Sabaah ad-Dolaabi and others.

Status: Thiqah

Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

Those who praised him:

1-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal was asked about him and he said: “There is nothing wrong in him, his hadeeth is close (Hasan)”

2-    Imaam Yahya ibn Ma’een said: “He is Thiqah”
[Taareekh Ibn Ma’een, narrated by Uthmaan ad-Daarimi: T. 388; Al-Kaamil: 4/454 T. 824]

3-    Imaam Muslim bin al-Hajjaaj has narrated from him in his Saheeh
[See, Tahdheeb al-Kamaal: 10/528]

4-    Imaam Abu al-Hasan al-Ijlee said: “He is Thiqah”
[Thiqaat: 1/401 T. 605]

5-    Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi said: “He is Saalih”
[Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel: 4/42 T. 178]

6-    Imaam Ibn Adee said: “Sa’eed bin Abdur Rahmaan has some good Ghareeb narrations, and I hope they are Mustaqeem, and he only erred in some things according to me, he would make a Mawqoof narration Marfoo and connect the Mursal narration, he did not do it deliberately.”

7-    Imaam al-Haakim Abu Abdullah graded one of his ahaadeeth saying, “This hadeeth is Saheeh upon the conditions of Shaykhayn, for verily its narrators are Thiqaat”

He also said: “Sa’eed bin Abdur Rahmaan al-Jumahi is Thiqah Ma’moon”

8-    Imaam Abu Awaanah has narrated from him in his Saheeh
[Mustakhraj Abu Awaanah: H. 928]

9-    Imaam Ibn Khuzaymah narrated from him in his Saheeh
[H. 1902, Al-A’dhami al-Deobandi said: Its chain is Saheeh]

10-          It is said that Ibn Khalfoon has mentioned him in his Kitaab ath-Thiqaat
[Ikmaal Tahdheeb al-Kamaal by Mughaltaai: 5/321] – Wallahu a’lam!

11-          Imaam Dhahabi said: “He is Thiqah, Al-Fasawi has weakened him”
[Al-Mughni: 1/263]

Imaam Dhahabi also mentioned him in “Man Takallam Feehi Wahuwa Mawthaq”
[1/86 T. 131]

12-          Haafidh Ibn Hajar said: “He is Sadooq, makes mistakes; Ibn Hibbaan exceeded in his weakness”
[Taqreeb: 2350]

Ibn Hajar also said: “He is declared Thiqah by Majority”
[Fath ul-Baari: 10/150 Under H. 5694]

Note: The authors of Tahreer Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb wrote: “He is Sadooq, Hasan ul-Hadeeth”

Those who criticized him:

1-    Imaam Zakariyyah bin Yahya as-Saaji is reported to have said: “Sa’eed bin Abdur Rahmaan al-Jumahi narrated from Hishaam bin Urwah and Suhayl bin Abi Saalih ahaadeeth which are not followed”
[Taareekh Baghdaad: 9/70]

However, one of the narrators of this saying is “Muhammad bin Ahmed bin Muhammad bin Ja’far, Abu al-Hasan al-Aadmi”. Hamzah bin Muhammad bin Taahir ad-Daqqaaq said: “He is not Truthful in Hadeeth”

2-    Imaam Ya’qoob bin Sufyaan al-Fasawi said: “He is Layyin ul-Hadeeth”
[Al-Ma’rifah wal Taareekh: 1/138]

3-    Imaam Ibn Hibbaan mentioned him in al-Majroheen and said: “He narrated fabricated narrations from Ubaydullah bin Umar and other Thiqah narrators…”
[Al-Majroheen by Ibn Hibbaan: 1/323 T. 398]

Note: Haafidh Ibn Hajar has refuted the Jarh of Ibn Hibbaan [See, Sayings of Praise # 12]

Conclusion:

Sa’eed bin Abdur Rahmaan al-Jumahi is Thiqah according to the Jumhoor.
