Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:
Those who praised him:
1- Imaam Shu’bah bin
al-Hajjaaj has narrated from him
[See, Tahdheeb al-Kamaal: 10/263]
And it is known that Imaam Shu’bah mostly
only narrated from Thiqah people according to him.
Imaam Dhahabi
said: “The teachers of Shu’bah are Jayyaad”
[Meezaan:
4504]
Haafidh Ibn
Hajar said while explaining his methodology in Tahdheeb that:
“If it has
been proven from the conditions of a narrator that he does not narrate except
from Thiqah, then I have mentioned the names of all his Shuyookh or most of
them (in Tahdheeb), such as Shu’bah, Maalik and others.”
[Tahdheeb
at-Tahdheeb: 1/5]
When Imaam
Azdi declared Abu Sadaqah Tawbah bin Abdullah to be “La Yuhtajju Bihi”, Imaam
Dhahabi said while refuting him: “I say, He is Thiqah, for Shu’bah has narrated
from him”
[Meezaan:
3611]
Haafidh Ibn
Hajar said about this saying of Imaam Dhahabi that: “I read the writing of
Dhahabi (in which he said) he is rather Thiqah for Shu’bah has narrated from
him; and the narration of Shu’bah from him is his Tawtheeq”
[Tahdheeb
at-Tahdheeb: 5161]
Note: Since
there is no Jarh from Imaam Shu’bah on Ajlah as compared to his narration from
him, we can conclude that Ajlah is Thiqah according to Imaam Shu’bah.
2- Imaam Ibn Sa’d said: “He is Thiqah Qaleel ul-Hadeeth”
[Tabaqaat al-Kubra: 1/338]
3- Imaam Muslim took evidence from him in his Saheeh

al-Ijlee said: “He is Thiqah”

hadeeth is Hasan Saheeh”
[Sunan
at-Tirmidhi: 759]
Imaam Tirmidhi
also said: “Some people of hadeeth have criticized him because of his memory”
[Same]
Note:
There is no contradiction between the two. Imaam Tirmidhi explained his view
about Sa’d by authenticating his hadeeth, while in the second saying, he
narrated what some of the other people think about him.
6- Imaam Ibn Adee said: “Sa’d bin Sa’eed has Saalih narrations
close to being straight, and I do not see any wrong with the quantity (of
narrations) he has narrated”

7- Imaam Ibn Hibbaan mentioned him among the Thiqah narrators and
said: “He makes mistakes” and “He does not commit grave mistakes…”

[Al-Mustakhraj:
H. 377, 378, 2696, 2698, 2699, 2700, 2913, 2914]

14-
Imaam an-Nawawi said: “The
Majority has declared him Thiqah, and Muslim narrated from him in his Saheeh
and this is sufficient in taking evidence from him”
[Al-Majmoo
Sharh al-Muhadhdhab: 5/300]
15-
Haafidh Ibn al-Mulaqqin
refuted the Jarh on Sa’d bin Sa’eed and said: “As for the criticism with
regard to Sa’d bin Sa’eed then it is not correct, for verily although he has
been criticized, (Imaam) Muslim has narrated from him in his Saheeh taking
evidence from him…”
[Al-Badar
al-Muneer: 3/267]
Ibn
al-Mulaqqin also said: “The dispute about him is famous, but in fact the
Majority has done his Tawtheeq”
[Khulaasah
al-Badar al-Muneer: 2/99 H. 1623]
16-
Husayn bin Ibraaheem
al-Jurqaani authenticated his hadeeth
[See,
Al-Abaateel wal Manaakeer: 1/220, 2/115]
17-
Al-Busayri
authenticated his hadeeth saying, “This chain is Saheeh, its narrators are
Thiqaat, (as for) Sa’d bin Sa’eed, he is the brother of Yahya bin Sa’eed;
evidence is taken from him”
[Misbaah uz-Zajaajah: 4/82]

19-
Imaam Dhahabi said: “He
is Hasan ul-Hadeeth Taabi’ee”
[Al-Mughni:
2340]
He also said: “He
is one of the Thiqah narrators”
[Siyar A’laam
al-Nabula: 5/482]
He also
mentioned him in “Man Takallam Feehi Wahuwa Mawthaq”
[1/83]
20-
Haafidh Ibn Hajar
authenticated his hadeeth saying, “It is narrated by Abu Dawood with a chain
that fulfills the conditions of (Imaam) Muslim”

[1/311]
8- Haafidh Ibn Hajar said: “He is Sadooq, weak in memory”
[Taqreeb]
Note: Based
on the authentication of Ibn Hajar of a chain containing Sa’d as mentioned
above (Sayings of Praise # 20), we can say that “weak in memory” by Ibn Hajar
here does not mean weak altogether, but at least Hasan.
Conclusion:
Thus Sa'd bin Sa'eed al-Ansaari is proven to be Thiqah, Sadooq, and Hasan ul-Hadeeth according to the Jumhoor.
