Narrated by: Al-Bukhaari in al-Adab al-Mufrad – Abu Dawood – Tirmidhi – Nasaa’ee – Ibn Maajah

Teachers: Abdul Malik Ibn Jurayj, Ataa al-Khurasaani, Qataadah bin Da’aamah, Ibn Shihaab az-Zuhri, Makhool ash-Shaami, Ma’bad bin Hilaal and others.

Students: Ismaa’eel bin Ayyaash, Abdullah ibn Lahee’ah, Abdullah bin Mubaarak, Baqiyyah bin al-Waleed, Muhammad bin Shu’ayb bin Shaaboor, and others.

Status: Thiqah, Hasan ul-Hadeeth

Opinions of Ahl ul-Jarh wat Ta’deel:

1-    Marwaan bin Muhammad at-Taatri said: “Utbah bin Abi Hakeem is Thiqah”

2-    Imaam Yahya ibn Ma’een said: “He is Thiqah”
[Taareekh Ibn Ma’een, narrated by Ad-Dauri: 2/389]

3-    Imaam Ya’qoob bin Sufyaan al-Faarsi said: “He is Thiqah”
[Al-Ma’rifah wal Taareekh: 2/456]

4-    Imaam Abu Zur’ah ad-Dimashqi said: “He is Thiqah”
[Taareekh Abu Zur’ah: 73]

5-    Imaam Abu Haatim ar-Raazi said: “He is Saalih, there is nothing wrong in him”
[Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel: 6/371]

6-    Imaam Abu Hafs Ibn Shaaheen mentioned him among the Thiqah narrators
[Thiqaat: 1103]

7-    Imaam at-Tirmidhi authenticated his hadeeth saying: “This Hadeeth is Hasan Ghareeb”
[Sunan at-Tirmidhi: H. 3058]

8-    Imaam Abu Ahmed bin Adee al-Jarjaani said: “I hope there is nothing wrong in him”
[Al-Kaamil: 7/66]

9-    Imaam Ibn Khuzaymah narrated and took evidence from him in his Saheeh
[Saheeh Ibn Khuzaymah: H. 1093]

10-          Imaam Ibn Hibbaan narrated narrations from him in his Saheeh
[Saheeh Ibn Hibbaan: H. 385, 4604, 5577]

Imaam Ibn Hibbaan also mentioned him among the Thiqah narrators and said: “His hadeeth is reliable when other than Baqiyyah narrates from him”

11-          Imaam Abu Abdullah al-Haakim authenticated his hadeeth saying: “This Hadeeth is Saheeh ul-Isnaad”
[Mustadrak al-Haakim: H. 3287, 7912]

12-          Imaam Zayaa al-Maqdisi narrated from him in al-Mukhtaarah
[Al-Ahadeeth Al-Mukhtaarah: H. 2231, 2233 etc]

13-          Imaam an-Nawawi authenticated him and said: “The Jamhoor has declared him Thiqah”
[Al-Majmoo: 2/99]

14-          Imaam Dhahabi said: “He is in the Middle, Hasan ul-Hadeeth”
[Meezaan al-I’tidaal: 3/28]

Note:
·        Haafidh Zayla’ee al-Hanafi authenticated one of his hadeeth saying: “Its chain is Hasan”
[Nasb ur-Rayaa: 1/219]

·        Mughaltaai al-Hanafi authenticated his hadeeth saying: “Its chain is Saheeh”
[Sharh Ibn Maajah lil Mughaltaai: 1/770]

·        The Authors of Tahreer Taqreeb at-Tahdheeb (Shaykh Shu’ayb al-Arana’oot & Dr. Bashshaar Awwaad) have refuted the decision of Ibn Hajar and said: “Rather, he is Sudooq Hasan ul-Hadeeth”

1-    Imaam Ibn al-Madeeni said: “He is Da’eef”
[Su’alaat Ibn Abi Shaybah: 1/159]

2-    Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal weakened him slightly.
[Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel: 6/370-371, Chain Saheeh]

3-    Imaam Yahya ibn Ma’een said: “He is Da’eef in hadeeth”
[Al-Jarh wat Ta’deel: 6/371, Chain Saheeh]

4-    Imaam Nasaa’ee said: “He is Da’eef”
[Ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen: 415]

5-    Imaam ad-Daaraqutni said: “He is not strong”
[Sunan ad-Daaraqutni: 1/100]

6-    Haafidh al-Busayri said: “Utbah bin Abi Hakeem is Da’eef”
[Zawaaid Ibn Maajah: 1/28]

7-    Haafidh Noor ud-Deen al-Haythami said: “Utbah bin Abi Hakeem is Da’eef”
[Majma az-Zawaaid: 1/53]

8-    Imaam Ibn al-Jawzee mentioned him in Ad-Du’afa wal Matrokeen
[2254]

9-    Haafidh Ibn Hajar said: “He is Sudooq, makes abundant mistakes”
[Taqreeb: 4427]

Note: The Jarh of Muhammad bin Awf at-Taa’ee is not proven.

Conclusion:

Utbah bin Abi Hakeem is Thiqah, Hasan ul-Hadeeth according to the Jamhoor.
